A Tolerance For Pain

You threw your life away and I was eager to catch you.

I accepted you with all your insecurities.
I endured your defense mechanisms.
I submitted to the authority you wished to claim.

I enveloped you with an affection that feared no judgment from anyone.

I embraced the oblivious future with you
just to realize that you were not offering it anyway.

And today, I look at you and see the only possession I cannot claim.
I look at you and see that my dream was beneath my worth.

I grit my teeth, clasp my hands and take a deep breath
to relieve myself the compulsion of showing you the smile that tells how much I care.

I look away but I stand hearing your voice.
I keep my eyes dry while I listen to a sad song and reminisce memories of you.

Now, how can you say that I do not have a tolerance for pain?
